Descendants of
James LAMING

There are many Lamings in the Isle of Thanet, Kent; many come from Birchington, but the majority appear to come from Margate (albeit only a few miles away to the east). Any further, and you fall into the sea!

Several spellings abound, the most common variation being "Lamming". Several members of the family pronounce the word in this way, whilst spelling it with a single 'm'.

There is a statement in an 1864 book to the effect that the Lamings who owned Birchington Hall (and the estate which surrounded it) had lived in the area for some three centuries before the book was written. That could be said to be a challenge, because so far there is no positive trace of them further back than the middle of the eighteenth century.
